The Shelf Life of Dried Magic Mushrooms: Storing Shrooms for Potency

Magic mushrooms can provide a life-changing experience, but unfortunately, this natural medicine doesn’t last forever. In fact, just like almost all drugs and foods, mushrooms do have expiration dates. If you are hoping to take full advantage of your mushrooms and use them while you can, then take our top advice and tips for storing these goodies.

Curious to learn more about storing dried mushrooms for optimal potency? After years of trial and error on our end, we’ve got all the insider info for you. Read on!

Why Do Dried Shrooms Expire?

As magical as they are, at the end of the day, mushrooms are just organic matter, meaning that they, too, do expire. Similar to the foods in your kitchen, mushrooms will deteriorate and rot if left for too long without use. Luckily, dried mushrooms have a longer expiration date than fresh ones, which is why we choose to sell dried varieties.

If left unused for too long, or stored improperly, the mushrooms have the potential to grow mold that is harmful to ingest. Even if the expiration does not lead to the growth of dangerous bacteria, they could lose their potency. This means that the effect of the mushroom may be diminished. We have found through our own testing, that eating dried mushrooms past their expiration date leads to a much less profound trip with far fewer visuals.

How Long Do Dried Magic Mushrooms Stay Potent?

Mushrooms come in a variety of strains and doses, meaning that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to determining their shelf life. There are however some benchmarks you can use to give you the best guess. If you are ever conflicted on whether or not to eat your shrooms, it is best to avoid any that are slimy or have dark spots. If it’s ever a question – better to be safe than sorry.

Here are some expiration guidelines you can follow for storing various types of mushrooms:

  • Fresh mushrooms — Although potent and wonderful, fresh shrooms have the shortest shelf life, and last just 3 to 10 days.
  • Dried mushrooms — Lasting about 6-12 months, dried mushrooms have a much longer shelf life than fresh ones. In fact, by storing dried mushrooms in an airtight container, and keeping them away from moisture, heat, and light, we have had success maintaining dried mushrooms for up to 2 years!
  • Microdose capsules — Depending on production method, microdose capsules should last a good year to a year and a half.
  • Mushroom chocolates — A personal favorite, mushrooms made into sweet chocolate treats can last about a year to a year and a half.

Mushroom honey — A great choice for longer shelf life, mushroom honey can last an impressive 2 to 3 years. Pro tip – mushroom honey mixed into a cup of hot tea makes for a great way to start the day!

Fresh Mushrooms vs Dried Mushrooms

Both fresh mushrooms and dried mushrooms offer a deep and expansive dive into a psychedelic world, so what’s the difference between the two? Simple – one is dry and one is fresh, but it goes a bit deeper than that. There are alway two sides to any stories, and in the case of shrooms there is no exception to that rule. Everyone has an opinion when it comes to preferred experiences on fresh mushrooms or dried mushrooms, and it is always up for debate amongst our company and clients.

I asked some team members at our company for their thoughts and the main consensus was that although fresh mushrooms may provide a stronger high and a more intense trip, dried mushrooms are best for convenience and ease of use. As dried mushrooms last much longer, you are free to eat them on your own time and schedule, and it makes spacing out your trips easier. Plus, we can promise you that dried mushrooms will give you just as mind bending of an experience as freshies. Whichever you choose, we guarantee you’ll have an eye-opening experience!

With dried mushrooms, I always store them in an airtight container and keep them in a dark place away from moisture. With this method, I’ve had shroomies last for two whole years! As for fresh ones, on the rare chance I come across them, I use a different method. First, I brush any dirt or debris off of them, and then I wrap them in a paper towel, and pop them in a plastic bag. Placed in the fridge this way, my fresh mushrooms can last about two weeks.

Can I Still Consume Psychedelics if They Have Expired?

We do not recommend the consumption of psychedelics that have gone bad. The main reason being that expired mushrooms could make you sick and affect your health. Past their shelf life, mushrooms, magic or not, can become slimy, present dark spots, grow mold, and degrade. These are all warning signs that your overdue mushroom could make you very ill! Just like you wouldn’t throw stinky shiitake mushrooms into your stir fry, you also shouldn’t eat moldy magic ones.

Aside from making you sick, expired mushrooms could also have lost their potency. Either way, we say nay to eating old fungi.

What Are The Risks of Eating Expired Dried Shrooms?

The main risk involved with eating expired or degraded dried shrooms is getting sick. Keep in mind, magic mushrooms are organic matter, and similar to other plants and foods from the ground, they do go bad. One of our team members, Tom, can vouch that a sick tummy isn’t worth it. He says, “I made that mistake one time, thinking I could get at least a little trippy from some expired mushrooms. Not only did I have a barely-there high, but I also wound up with three days of food poisoning-like symptoms. For all the people in the back – it’s not worth it!”. Our advice – listen to Tom and toss your expired shrooms.
