Are your magic mushrooms safe to consume?

Our mushrooms come from a collective of Canadian growers we know personally, and we do not stock a strain we would not take ourselves.

The safety guidelines written for psychedelic research describe psilocybin, the active compound in magic mushrooms, as fairly safe for the body and not considered addictive (Johnson et al. 2008). The main risks they name are mental, such as a frightening trip.

Our dosing guide sets four hard rules, each with its sources. Never mix magic mushrooms with alcohol or other drugs, and do not take them while pregnant or before driving. If you or close family have had psychosis, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, talk to a psychiatrist first.

How should I take magic mushrooms?

Capsules, chocolates and gummies come in measured pieces, so you take them as they are. Dried mushrooms can be eaten whole, ground into capsules or steeped in hot water as a tea.

Whichever you pick, start with a low dose and use the dosing guide to work up.

How do you recommend storing your products?

In the closed pack, somewhere dry and dark at room temperature, away from sunlight, heat and big swings in temperature.

A 2021 lab study of Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms compared ways of keeping them. Of everything it tested, dried mushrooms kept in the dark at room temperature lost the least psilocybin and related compounds, so a dark cupboard suits them.

What is the lemon tek method?

Lemon tek, short for lemon technique, means soaking ground dried mushrooms in lemon juice for 15 to 20 minutes, then taking the mix. People use it hoping the effects start sooner.

If you try it, start with less than you would take plain.

What are the different dose levels?

Our dosing guide sets out six levels, from a microdose you should not feel to a full, immersive trip, with what to expect at each one. The product pages give each product’s own amounts.

New to it? Start with a low dose.

Can I microdose with magic mushrooms?

Yes. A microdose is a small amount meant to stay below the point where you feel it. Our microdosing capsules and gummies come measured, and the dosing guide shows where a microdose sits among the six levels.

How can I have a safe and positive experience?

Plan the two things you control: your state of mind going in and the place you are in. Pick a familiar, comfortable place, and for a first time or a big dose, have one sober person with you.

The safety guidelines written for psychedelic research ask for the same things: careful preparation, a safe room and support from people you trust (Johnson et al. 2008).

Can I combine magic mushrooms with other drugs?

No. Health Canada warns that taking magic mushrooms with substances such as alcohol, cannabis or amphetamines raises the risk of serious side effects.

Some medicines are a hard no too, among them lithium, antidepressants and tramadol. The dosing guide lists them with their sources.

Can magic mushrooms cause psychological trauma?

For some people they can. The safety guidelines written for psychedelic research name a frightening trip as the most likely risk, and say lasting problems, such as psychosis (losing touch with what is real), are less common (Johnson et al. 2008).

Health Canada says people who have a mental health condition, or are more likely to develop one, may face a higher risk of side effects. If you or close family have had psychosis, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, talk to a psychiatrist first.

What can I do if I’m having a bad trip?

Remind yourself, or whoever is tripping, that it wears off: Health Canada puts the usual length at four to six hours. Move somewhere calm, sit or lie down, breathe slowly and keep a sober person close.

If someone may hurt themselves or others, or seems physically unwell, call 911. If the trip turns into thoughts of suicide, or more than someone can cope with, call or text 9-8-8, Canada’s Suicide Crisis Helpline, at any hour.

Are magic mushrooms legal in Canada?

Psilocybin is still illegal under Canada’s federal drug law. Health Canada says making, selling or having magic mushrooms is against the law unless the department gives permission through a licence or an exemption.

Can magic mushrooms be detected in a drug test?

Usually not, because standard workplace tests look for other drugs. In the US, for example, the Department of Transportation’s required test covers five drugs: cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, opioids and PCP, also called angel dust. Psilocybin is not on that list (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).

An employer or a testing program can still order a test that includes psilocybin, so ask what yours covers.

Can I travel with magic mushrooms?

Leave them at home when you travel abroad. Psilocybin is illegal under Canadian law, and the country you enter applies its own drug laws at the border.

What are the potential benefits of magic mushrooms?

Clinical trials of psilocybin, given with professional support, have measured its effect on depression and on drinking. In a trial of 233 adults with treatment resistant depression (depression other treatments had not helped), some took one 25 mg dose and others a 1 mg dose for comparison. At three weeks, depression scores had dropped more with 25 mg, though the difference had faded by twelve weeks (Goodwin et al. 2022).

In a trial of 95 adults with alcohol use disorder, one group had psilocybin with psychotherapy and the other an active placebo, a dummy drug with noticeable effects of its own. Over 32 weeks, the psilocybin group drank heavily on 9.7% of days, against 23.6% for the placebo group (Bogenschutz et al. 2022). None of these studies tested our products or microdosing.

When you’re on mushrooms, what is happening in the brain?

Your body turns psilocybin into psilocin, the compound behind the effects. In healthy adults, psilocin in the blood peaked about two hours after a dose (Holze et al. 2023).

In brain scans of volunteers, psilocybin quieted the brain’s main hubs, the regions that connect many others. The bigger the drop in activity in a hub at the front of the brain, the stronger the effects people felt (Carhart-Harris et al. 2012).

What is a psilocybin therapy session?

In clinical research, the dosing session sits inside a short program (Johnson et al. 2008). Preparation meetings come first and follow up contact comes after. In between is the dosing session itself, in a calm, safe room with at least two staff members there for support.

Health Canada says no medicine containing psilocybin is approved in Canada or anywhere else, and that clinical trials are the right way to move this research forward.

What is the history of psilocybin use?

The Aztecs called these mushrooms teonanácatl and used them in religious and healing rituals, a practice Spanish missionaries in the 1500s tried to wipe out. A 1957 magazine photo essay described the mushrooms to the Western world, and chemists then identified and made their active compound, psilocybin.

More recently, clinical studies cleared to run by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have tested psilocybin with psychotherapy for depression, anxiety and some addictions (Nichols 2020).
